Website Structure

Your website structure is really your menu system. This provides a means for users to click on various links and images to gain access to your website content. It is essential that sufficient thought and planning is given to your website structure well in advance to building your website so that the information can be presented in a structured and logical way within your website. This will enable your web users to access the information they are looking for quickly and efficiently.

In general no more than 3 clicks should be required to access any information on your website if you are to avoid losing your web visitors.

Primary Navigation

Generally the primary navigation is across the top of the website. Drop down menus can be employed but the key is to give your users limited logical choices to guide them to the information they are seeking. Come up with a list of maximum 10 primary navigation links to start with. An example is given below.

  1. Home
  2. Products
  3. Services
  4. Support
  5. Contact Us

Secondary Navigation

Generally the secondary navigation is context sensitive and is down the Left Hand side of the website. Content sensitive really mean that a web user clicks on the primary navigation and a web page with a relevant left hand menu will appear to guide him further.

An example would be to click on the "products" link on the top menu and then the products or product categories would be listed in the left hand menu for the web user to make a further logical choice and narrow down his choice to the product or product range he is looking for.
