What are Email Aliases?

Email aliases are really "dummy" email accounts that are used to create inbound channels of targeted email traffic. Aliases are automatically forwarded to one of the real email accounts of your choice.

Lets say for example that we have an organisation with 3 members of staff:

  • John - Sales
  • Paul - Service
  • Jenny - Accounts

I could then set up aliases as follows:

  • sales-at-mydomain.com - forwards to john-at-mydomain.com
  • service-at-mydomain.com - forwards to paul-at-mydomain.com
  • accounts-at-mydomain.com - forwards to jenny-at-mydomain.com

If for any reason one of the members of staff leave then the alias can simply be adjusted to forward the emails to a different address. This means that once published the alias addresses will not need to change which can be a big advantage.

A general rule of thumb therefore is:

1) Create a real mailbox for each member of staff

2) Create an alias for each logical role or communications channely that you would like your customers to use.
